This is how the weaving loom looked yesterday afternoon. I warped it with 2 meter long and a little over 1/2 meter wide warp with cotton thread named Matko from Croatian company Unitas and decided to make two pieces. The first, black and white piece I finished last night, and started the second meter in a different pattern, at first in orange then black.
I have just taken my weaving from the loom, and this is how the final works look like - black/white and orange/black combination. It is very soft on touch, and it looks great. Will make a nice table cloth, although it could be a nice fabric as well.
The spinning wheel is working again! I have also got a "Bunny Bag" from Christine. Bag full of wonderful white and fluffy angora fibre, fresh from two angora bunnies. But, more about that over the weekend. It should be raining tomorrow, and I plan to spin and weave. The plan is to make the back part for the new and light wool jacket, and probably start a new pieces in one of the patterns which few people believe are possible to weave on the loom.

Trebalo je nesto vremena, no bez veceg sam ga problema sama sastavila i odonda - predem.
Here I am. Spinning. Actually, my apologies since the last two posts on the blog have (for some strange reason) been saved lower down on this page, so please scroll and you will find them.
I am mixing those lovely spring coloured wool fibres with each others, then a bit with the silk, and am also spinning the silk pure. Before I get to photograph everything I made, here are a couple of photos of my spinning wheel so you can see where am I making it. The spinning wheel arrived in a box, all the parts nicely wrapped. It took a little time to figure it out, but I have managed to put it together with major effort, and since them I am - spinning.
Danas sam nabavila skoro dva kilograma novog posla.
- 700 grama runa u proljetnim bojama
- 1 kg svilene predje dudovog svilca
So, third time, lucky time. I have twice managed to delete everything I wrote for today's blog, so hopefully I am luckier now. Grrrrrrrr........
Earlier today, I got supplied with almost two kilograms of new work. Since I have not been spinning anything lately, and as I cannot find any exciting yarn lately, and since the spinning wheel had a long winter sleep, I have decided to get ready for the spring spinning projects. I have got:
- 700 gram of rovings in spring colours
- 1 kg mulberry silk rovings
The plan is to mix some of the silk with the wool (the 700g but also the alpaca wool that has been carded and is waiting to be spun), while the rest I will spin into the silk thread, probably very thin and then doubled.

Drugi dan predvecer, zvoni telefon, javlja se distributerka, i pita me da sta me zanima.
Nastavci price slijede u blogu.
How did it all start?
My entrance in the spinning and weaving world happened – totally unplanned.
One grey winter day in 2003. while visiting an alpaca farm in Austria, in an upstairs corridor, I spotted the brand and very new, not-once-used spinning wheel, standing lonely in the corner. Although the lady had a storage full of wonderful alpaca fiber from her 8 animals, she had taken no time to learn spinning. I could simply not believe it. A couple of months later, sitting bored in front of the computer, the lonely spinning wheel came to my mind. I remembered the producer's name, checked for the link, immediately filled out the form asking for more information. Next evening, the phone rings, and the distributor of the company is on the phone, asking what would I be interested in. Wow.... I could not believe my ears, and totally shocked answered: „EVERYTHING“, and explained her the story of the lady and a lonely spinning wheel which made me ask for the information.
Few days later, I was sitting in her flat attending the course, some weeks later the Ashford Traditional Spinning Wheel together with 3kg of fleece has moved into our living room. Well..... that is not the end, since during the course, I was introduced to the weaving looms, and the agreement was that in case I am interested, I return for a weaving course after the summer vacation time is over. Should I mention that I could hardly wait for that course. I came home from the course with the rigid heddle loom which I happilly am using even today. In the meantime, the wheel and the loom found a new friend in the 8-shaft loom. The living room has turned into a weaving room.
This was the story about the beginnings, while you are welcome to follow the rest of it in this blog.

I have just read an interesting story about the reflections and lives of Roman women related to spinning. The article covers exhibition in Split Archeological Museum (taken from Slobodna Dalmacija - the article is Croatian)
"The fake distaff's"
Weaving and spinning was not only done by servants but also the respected society members, or, they just wanted to be remembered with the distaff in their hand, which showed their "matrona" status, very good and busy housewife. The distaffs were found in female graves, but most of them had a symbolic meaning, they were made of amber or glass, and you could never spin a yarn on them.

Idem usisavati.
I warped the loom with 25cm wide and 190cm long cotton thread in the skin colour, which was nicely blending with the champagne colour of the silk. Well, looking on I found a small bag with the remains of the silk/cotton fabric from one of the last bits sewn by my tailor. I cut the fabric in few pieces and decided to weave it instead of weft on a few places. Well, I decided on a complicated and slow pattern on 8-shaft loom and started weaving. Instead of scarf, half a meter into the weaving, I shortened my way, and decided to have a small silk bag instead. Photos of the finished work are attached. All that is left is to think of the handle (probably would need to be knitted or crocheted), connect the ends, and the silk bag is ready for the trip. Remaining meter of the warp I plan to use for playing with patterns and colours, and…. Who knows, there could well be another bag coming off the loom. But this, tomorrow or day after. Now I have to hover and clean the flat….
Nema me. Predem. Svila ide prekrasno, proljetna vunica takodjer. Slike slijede cim poslikam.
It was about twenty cards with wool samples, one nicer than the other. Well, it made me both happy and sad, because of my decision from few months ago not to purchase new wool (of course, except if I see something extremely interesting, which often happens to me), since my wool storage is still full. Actually overfull.
You may ask why?
The reason is that from time to time, my Mom, aunties, neighbours, acquaintances and all other people interested when the mention of my weaving and spinning arrives, realize that once upon a time they all planned to knit, crochet, and do something creative, and somewhere in the forgotten corner there must be some woolly remains. And…. off they go to clean the house and find on the bottom of the wardrobes at home, weekend house, winter house, in the sewing machine box and elsewhere various touched and untouched wool balls which has some decades ago planned to become a husband’s pullover, daughter’s scarf, granny’s bag, auntie’s hat, friend’s slippers, or something even more advanced. All of that get sorted out, put into a bag, and then arrives to me to combine it into my weaving and use it for whatever I can think of.
This is how my wool storage grew, but from time to time, I decide to use it up. Rudi’s carpet came that way, but various other details in my other works. And, finally, here is a couple of photos of the new and interesting wool from my sample cards from the beginning of the story. Have you recognized yourself in the story??

Hladno me subotnje jutro me inspiriralo da napravim - kapu.
Thanks to Jana who has recently asked me why don’t I make a weaving blog, I have taken a bit of time, suffered a little learning how do make it and finally prepared it myself.
This past weekend, totally unplanned, I have made not one, not two, but three hats. Everything started innocently, with an email from my first weaving teacher to contribute with my idea in development of a new booklet for the newest and smallest of the weaving looms - "Knitters Loom". After a bit of thinking what to make what the others did not make yet (since everyone makes a scarf, longer scarf, narrow scarf, bag longer or shorter), I realized that I have not seen one thing. Chilly Saturday morning going by bicycle to the bakery inspired my to make a – HAT.
Measured two heads, came up with app. 60cm diameter which should be enough for both a male and a female hat. I warped the loom with the remains of some wool that I span myself last or a year before – chocolate and orange colour. For the weft I found a ball of “Kid Mohair” that is for a longer time sitting around in my wool storage, and in a little less than two hours I was ready with a piece of woven fabric. Connected the fringes, put the top of one side together with the woollen thread, asked on the weaving forum how to make a pom-pom (which I made but did not attach to the hat yet).
