Vikend projekti / Weekend projects

  • Isprela dvije štrenice šarene, debele interesantne vune uz pomoć mog jumbo dodatka kolovratu;
  • Šal u tehnici saća na svih osam listova tkalačkog stana;
  • Četiri male, ružičaste kape na malom tkalačkom stanu.
The weekend was long, cold and rainy, really autumn-like, but I have managed to use it productively as it was not the weather for being outside much. I have managed to get going with some of the pending projects, and have done three (long) outstanding things:
  • Spinning two sets of thick and and interesting yarn on the new jumbo flyer on my spinning wheel.
  • Scarf in waffle weave on 8-shaft loom.
  • Four smaller size hats (pink and girly) on the Knitters Loom.

Kuharice/zidnjaci /Kitchen wall hangings

Dobra djeca, dobra hrana
To nam kuha vrijedna mama.

Tvoja ljubav i naš dom najdraži su srcu mom.

Od ljubavi nismo siti
Treba dobro jesti i piti.

It was not my plan to write a post on this subject but since I was reminded about it tonight, and as this is a lovely story of something rather traditional in old day Croatia, I would like to share it with all of you. I have seen similar things in Germany and Austria, but would be curious whether you have it in your countries.

Well, my first problem is to find the accurate translation. It is the hanging kitchen cloth, but not an ordinary kitchen cloth of today. At the end of the 19th and early 20th century the kitchens were rather big and spacious places where the women were preparing tasty good. The kitchen furniture was decorated with various hand-made items, while the kitchen walls were often decorated with so-called Kuharice or Zidnjaci (wall hanging), which the wealthier peasant women were buying pre-printed on the markets and spending the evenings sewing them in various colours to create interesting wall-hangings with numerous messages. The messages were educating younger girls how to behave in a marriage, learning how to cook and behave well, take care of health and hygiene. Some of the clothes were used as a storage place for combs, matches and brushes, while the others spoke of love or gave some funny and sarcastic sayings. They were very popular until late 50-ties in Croatia, and some of the older women would still have them stored in their wardrobes. The reason I am writing this story is that I have visited a lovely old lady who has an interesting collection of kitchen hangings with funniest of messages. Many of them were creation of her imagination, as they often did not have enough money to afford the pre-printed ones, so she made her own drawings, combined various thread colours and spent long and cold winter days sewing them on the cotton cloths. Here are some of the pictures of those hand made works.

Stigao mi je poklon / My present arrived

Naravno da sam odmah nabavila (i uz svu onu lijepu i gotovo ispredenu vunu koju ste vidjele u zadnjem blog postu) i vrećicu prediva jesenskih boja. I seem to have really fallen behind. So much that I have not until tonight noticed that my hat project and name was officially announced in the September edition of the Ashford Club email newsletter as one of those that will feature in the Knitters Loom Project Book. If you do not know what the Knitters Loom is, check out the page its webpage: http://www.knittersloom.com/ For those interested, here is the newsletter with some additional interesting stories and projects: http://www.ashfordclub.co.nz/august-2007-newsletter.html
In the meantime, I managed to
pick up the present I received from Ashford for having my hat design selected for the upcoming Ashford Project Book. It is a Jumbo Double Drive Flyer Unit for my Traditional spinning wheel. I have been thinking of having that piece of equipment since a while and finally be able to make the thick and interesting yarns, and this was just a perfect present. I have fixed it on my spinning wheel already, and am planning to be making interesting yarns which became rather hard to find and buy. I have immediately bought some lovely and autumn-y color sliver for spinning. The photos of the newest yarns will follow, but for the moment, here are the photos of the present and the first attempt at spinning thick yarn.
