Prica o lanu II - čupanje / Linen story II - harvest

Evo i obećanog nastavka priče o lanu.

Tko zna, možda i bolje, jer još i dan danas nismo preradili niti polovicu berbe.

As promised (and while having a small break from weaving a new piece), I realized that I still owe you the rest of the linen story. I was especially reminded about it by a great friend from Cyprus who happened to be visiting during the harvest time. He sent me this message: “...nice website although you forgot to mention how long does it take to harvest a filed of linen. Especially when this is followed by a village of crazy but lovable Croatians :-)
Here they are, the photos of the crazy crowd harvesting the flax field. Not everything was ripe yet, but since the weather forecast was calling rain and bad weather, we decided to harvest it nevertheless. The forecast was right, as the same night, there was an incredible storm with lots of rain and big winds. Should we not have done it, there would be just very little left to harvest.
Maybe better, who knows. We still have more than half of it waiting to be processed and eventually span into a lovely linen yarn.

Slike s izlozbe/Pictures at an exhibition, Budapest, Hungary

Let's have a small break from the linen story, as I want to bring you up-to-date with the latest news and pictures from my last week's Budapest exhibition. It was a challenging space to put up a weaving exhibition, since half of the space is the bookstore, the other half a cafe with gallery walls. My manequins proved to be very useful, and as one of the visitors said: "this exhibition gives a new life to the bookstore, and would be great to keep the exhibits there for the future". Well.... not sure that Treehugger Dan liked to hear that. I did :-)

The opening event was fun with about 30 people coming in and out, looking at the exhibits - scarves, fabrics, lavender hangings, and enjoying the cheese, ham and white wine from Kalnik on a very hot May evening. Lots of friends, lots of other people among them a lady from Arizona with 30 years weaving experience. I am happy with the turnout during the three days, and can conclude that the event was a success. We already discussed to make a second exhibition later in a year, when the weather cools down, and it becomes more appropriate to be wearing more woven and warmer clothes then it was these hot three days in Budapest.

Vec smo dogovorili da potkraj godine organiziramo jos jednu izlozbu, kad zahladi i dodje vrijeme za obacenje toplijih, tkanih i vunenih stvari.

Prica o lanu / The story of linen

Evo slicica plavog polja lana.

Did you ever ask yourself how long does it take to make a 1,5 meter of linen fabric for your summer trousers? Well..... I did.
Over a year ago, I have decided to start from the very beginning and have purchased a couple of kilograms of linen/flax seeds that has taken me for the journey through the history. Linen is grown for over 5000 years. Linium usitatissimum lat. belongs to one of the oldest cultivated plants and is nowadays used for food, medicine, paint production, fabric making.
Once the word spread that I have bought a few kilos of seed, it became quite suspicious that many cows in the neighborhood developed digestion problems which can only be cured with the linen seeds. I had so much of it, that I was more than happy to share it with the concerned neighbors. The health report was that the cure has apparently worked out for all the animals, while the rest of it was planted on the field below the neighbor’s vineyard. This is how they looked when blooming.

Svileni je komad otkan / Silk piece has been finished

Gotova sam! Moze biti i sal, i materijal, i pokrivac. Pustite masti na volju.
Kako vam se svidja?

I have finished! It is a weird day, grey and rainy, and I am not inspired for taking photos. In addition, the piece is rather big, and I just don't know what is the best way to photograph it. The end result is a little shorter than 3 meters, 60cm wide. 2/3 is beige, natural Tussah silk colour, while the 1/3 is black cotton. It could be a scarf, material or a large long blanket. Let your imagination grow. How do you like it?

Svileni sal ili tkanina? / Silk scarf or a fabric?

Nedjelja.
Plan mi je to odraditi u naredna tri dana, no..... let's see.
Sunday. Inspiration has arrived. I have not touched the big loom since over two weeks, and I can hear it jealously screaming: „it’s the time to start a new project!“. Late last night I finished spinning the next 150 grams of Mulberry silk, and that reminded me that somewhere in my wool storage there is enough of Tussah silk of fabulous natural colour of champagne, off-cream colour and that I could do something with it.
So, I warped the 8-shaft loom, 63cm wide, and a bit over 3 meter long. The plan is to use the plaited twill draft above. I used 8 balls of black cotton thread (Ana from Dalmatinka Sinj). Each ball is 50 gram and 330 meter long. The weft is the Tussah silk (the report on how much have I used will come at the end). The warping process lasted rather long. The weaving is not going too fast either since the silk is rather thin and single plied. I don’t want to double it since it looks just nice as it is. I originally thought it would make a nice fabric, but now that the first 10cm are done, it seems like a fabulous new scarf project. Will see when I finish. The plan is to finalize it in the coming three days, but……. Let’s see. Here is just one photo for curious readers:

Kapica i torbica/Small hat and bag

Kreativni prvomajski vikend.
Plan radi fenomenalno.
Evo slika:
Creative weekend. We were going away, but I could not be myself if I wouldn't have packed and taken the smallest of my weaving looms, since I knew there would be some free time to weave something. I was right.
It has been some months since I introduced the practice of creative, self-made presents for the kids, rather then buying a chocolate, bombons, biscuits (or pijamas). I would take some time to weave a small scarf, hat or something else, preferably useful and nice. So far, the plan worked out fabolously and makes everyone happy. Mom's, Dad's, grannies, grandpa's, and the happiest of all have been the kids. I usually take care to match the colour depending whether it is a girl or a boy, since every small girl (sadly enough) adores pink and Barbie-like things, while the boys are easy, although the blue should be around. This time, I made the present together with its' received, a 4,5 year old Sebastian. He was thrilled to have been able to choose the wool, and help with warping the loom and weaving in the weft for his small hat and a bag (we planned the scarf, but it was too short, so we made it into a bag later).
I made it using some orange wool for the warp, and self-span coloured merino wool in the weft. Here are the photos:
