2008

Olinka!

The newest of the years has arrived. I was busy finishing the last year, and have fallen ill welcoming the new one. I am finally feeling better today. After some thinking what should be my opening post in the new year, rather then making any big new year's resolution, I remembered my favorite chapter from the book of Alessandro Baricco: Silk. I have never seen the movie, but judging by the trailer below and the book itself, I should soon be looking for it.
All the best wishes, and many happy returns to my blog. I promise to keep it as informative and interesting and hopefully more up to date then I did so far. Olinka!

Svila, Alessandro Baricco

The Silk, Alessandro Baricco
"Balbadiou was the man who twenty years earlier had come to town, made straight for the mayor's office, stepped in unannounced, laid on his desk a silk scarf the colour of the sunset and asked him:
"Do you know what this is?"
"Woman's stuff."
"Wrong. Man's stuff: money."
The mayor had him thrown out. Baldaboiu built a mill down by the river, a shet beside the woods in which to raise the worms, and at the crossroads for Vivier a chapel dedicated to Saint Agnes. He took on some thirty hands, sent to Italy for a mysterious machine made out of wood, all wheels and gears, and did not utter another word for seven months. Then he went back to the mayor and laid on his desk neat piles of large-denomination banknotes to the value of thirty thousand francs.
"Do you know what this is?"
"Money"
"Wrong. It's a proof that you are a blockehad".
He gathered them up, dropped them into his bag and made to leave. The mayor stopped him.
"What the devil am I supposed to do?"
"Nothing: and you will be mayor of a wealthy town."
Five years later there were seven mills at Lavilledieu, which had become one of Europe's leading centres for the rearing of silkworms and spinning of silk. Baldaboiu did not own them all. Other local notables and land owners had followed him in this curious commercial venture. To each one of them Baldabiou had divulged the secrets of the trade without making difficulties. He derived far greater amusement from this than from making a scckful of money. Teaching. Having secrets to impart. That's the way he was."
